Tacos in a Bag has been a staple in my camping diet since my very first Girl Scout overnight camping trip when I was 9-years-old. It remains an essential part of my camping experience as now I help my summer campers make it for themselves. Tacos in a Bag is great for serving a large group of people because everyone can customize their own meal and there’s little clean up! It’s also really popular with kids; they can get involved with making their own food without being too close to the fire.

Tacos in a Bag has a lot of variations so you can adapt the ingredients to what you like. Here are a few recommended ingredients:

  • Meat—ground beef or chicken
  • Veggies—onions, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.
  • Toppings—guacamole, sour cream
  • Shredded cheese
  • Tortilla chips or Doritos (Fritos are another option)

It’s easy to precook and season the meat with taco seasoning at home if you don’t want to do it while camping. Over the fire, you can preheat or cook the meat and sauté any vegetables. With a large group of people, you can cut up all the vegetables and divide them into bowls so everyone can pick what they want. The fun part of putting it all together!

You can either buy a big bag of tortilla chips or Doritos, or you can buy the individual size bags. If you have a large bag, you can divide up the chips into a brown paper bag. Crunch up the bag so all the chips inside break into smaller pieces, fill the bag with the meat, vegetables, and other toppings you’d like, and then shake the bag up so everything gets mixed together. You can enjoy your Tacos in a Bag straight from the bag!
