Winter Camping Part I: Warm Destinations

December 2, 2013

If you’re contemplating becoming a snowbird this winter, you’re in good company — over a million of us will hit the road to escape the cold weather this season. Luckily, there are wonderful warm weather destinations that await.

Here are a few hot picks!

Newport Dunes Waterfont Resort

Newport Beach, California

Newport Beach in Southern California is well known for swimming, boating, surfing, and ocean kayaking as well as fabulous restaurants and nightlife in its artsy, eclectic town. (Being near Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Catalina Island doesn’t hurt either!) Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort is comprised of 100 acres situated at the entrance of the Newport Bay Conservancy, an estuary on the upper Newport Bay, and the Back Bay Nature Preserve. There are 382 RV sites and 24 cabins on lush grounds with all amenities and year-round activities for the kids. Their waterpark offers sailboat, paddleboard, kayak, and electric boat rentals, making it a perfect all-around family destination.

Bahia Honda State Park

Big Pine Key, Florida

The Florida Keys have a get-away-from-it-all tropical vibe all year round, but winter is one of the best times to visit. Fishing, canoeing, kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, birding, bicycling, beachcombing, and just soaking up the sun on two sugar sand beaches — you can find it all at Bahia Honda State Park. Set on 500 acres and near the Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary, the park has three separate campgrounds, with a total of 80 sites available...some right on the dazzling Gulf.

South Padre Island KOA

South Padre Island, Texas

With 70 miles of palm trees and sandy beaches on the tropical tip of Texas at Laguna Madre Bay, South Padre Island KOA offers full RV amenities as well as fabulous beaches, boating, kayaking, birding and fishing and some of the best windsurfing in the US. Located on the Padre Island National Seashore, which protects the longest undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world, visitors can experience numerous fascinating ecosystems and migratory bird paths, all while soaking up some sun.

We hope this gives you a few inspirations for your winter travels. For more ideas, search our directory of 17,000 campgrounds by city or by state. As always, be safe and have fun, from all of us at Red Rover!
